Sharon Jones, the dazzling queen of soul, took her audience on a funky ride through rhythm and blues. Born in Augusta, Georgia in 1956, she grew up surrounded by music — gospel in church, sweet Motown on the radio. But it wasn’t until later that she found herself at the center of the soul revival.
Jones had dreams bigger than life itself. After moving to Brooklyn in her youth, she performed as a backing singer for various bands but faced many ups and downs along the way. It wasn’t until her forties that Jones finally got her big break with the Dap-Kings — a group dedicated to reviving classic soul sounds reminiscent of artists like James Brown and Aretha Franklin.
Funny enough? Sharon was originally turned away from some gigs because they thought she was “too old” to make it big! Little did they know that age gives you just enough time to cultivate those soulful vibes!
When Sharon teamed up with musicians who fawned over old-school funk like it was gold dust (and it is!), they formed Daptone Records — a label that would put retro soul back on everyone’s playlists! The band’s tight grooves echoed memories from another era while being fresh and lively.
The Dap-Kings were no ordinary band; they were a family of lovable weirdos. Each member brought their own unique flavor:
These guys didn’t just play music; they created an experience inspired by vintage records while embracing modern flair.
With albums like Doin’ It Again (2002) and I Learned the Hard Way (2010), Sharon Jones brought back sizzling horn sections, catchy hooks, and good ol’ call-and-response vocals. Her unmistakable voice could give anyone goosebumps one minute while making you want to dance your socks off the next!
For one album cover shoot , all sorts of wild ideas floated around: dancing lions? Nope! How about standing under disco balls attached to giant banana peels?! In true funk fashion – simplicity won out – keeping things down-to-earth yet groovy!
Although success came late for Jones, when it did—man oh man—it poured! She garnered Grammy nominations and collaborated with heavyweights across genres: Michael Bublé to Prince – legends recognized talent when they heard it!
But here comes another giggle-inducing tidbit—you might think superstar features mean smooth sailing… Not quite! When recording “100 Days,” Prince reportedly interrupted their session not once—but twice—to offer unsolicited vocal tips—as if his input was any more divine than what Sharon already brought!
Sadly we lost our beloved Queen of Soul after battling pancreatic cancer in November 2016. However…her legacy continues through live recordings capturing her energy—and let’s be real—a whole slew of joyous souls getting down wherever there’s music playing!
Her influence inspires countless newcomers trying their hand at this colorful genre. Artists today see how authenticity shines brighter than any auto-tuned pop star—it stays rooted deep inside your heart if you let loose those rhythms properly.
In every show during rehearsals—Sharon would often challenge members for spontaneous dance-offs before sound checks; we’re talking serious moon-walking action combined perfectly into choreography unrehearsed but executed flawlessly—the kind only real joy can fuel!
Funk lives on because groove never dies baby! Thanks largely due towards shining stars themselves such as Miss Sharon bringing timelessness intertwined effortlessly between eras across styles carving pathways anew every single beat dropped onward evermore…
So whether you’re spinning vinyl or hitting shuffle online—if ever feeling blue? Just remember how Ms.Jones made everything feel alright cause THAT is exactly what grooves do best—they lift us higher into realms beyond where nothing even matters except pure unadulterated FUNK & SOUL connectin’ every heart together amidst divine experiences shared everywhere round world-wide!
Now that’s something worth singing about… 🎤💃✨
