Black metal. It’s more than just music; it’s a way of life, a brotherhood (and sisterhood!) tied together by moody riffs, shrieking vocals, and an aesthetic that dances on the edge of darkness. Let’s take a groovy stroll down memory lane to see how this wild genre emerged and evolved over time, throwing in some chuckle-worthy tidbits about its key figures along the way.
Black metal sprouted from the fertile soil of heavy metal in the early 1980s. Bands like Venom, with their 1982 album Black Metal, are often cited as one of the first to embrace that eerie sound coupled with satanic themes. Their raw energy paved the way for what was to come, inspiring legions of musicians who wanted to turn up both the volume and attitude.
Fast forward a few years—by the late ’80s and early ’90s, black metal was starting to resemble what we know today. Norwegian bands like Mayhem and Burzum were leading this charge. But black metal wasn’t just about music; it came with an ethos—a complex mix of anti-establishment views, nihilism, and folklore wrapped up in grim aesthetics.
Norway’s black metal scene is where things got seriously chilly—and I don’t mean temperature-wise! This era was infamous not only for its legendary musical output but also for its notorious antics.
Mayhem had their fair share of weirdness. Their original vocalist, Dead (yes, he went by that name) famously committed suicide in 1991. His bandmates took quite literally “making art out of tragedy”—they reportedly made jewelry out of his skull fragments! Talk about taking “wearing your heart on your sleeve” too far!
Then there’s Varg Vikernes from Burzum fame (and infamy). He gained notoriety not just for his minimalist black metal but also for burning churches—yeah you read that right! Varg claims he did it as an expression against Christianity taking root in Norway’s pagan history… or maybe he just wanted some extra drama points?
And don’t forget Fenriz from Darkthrone! This guy has such a passion for all things underground that sometimes he didn’t bother tuning his guitar before recording tracks (his reasoning? “Tuning is overrated”). You can hear those raw rhythm sections echo throughout Darkthrone’s classic albums—the vibe is unmistakably pure!
As we moved into the mid-’90s—commonly referred to as the “Second Wave”—black metal exploded beyond Norway into other countries including Sweden and Finland. Bands began layering more melodic tones while still keeping that harsh edge.
Enter bands like Emperor, who introduced symphonic elements into their music—but they were super serious on stage! Imagine them dressed head-to-toe in corpse paint while casually sipping herbal tea backstage between sets!
Now let’s sprinkle some humor across our narrative:

By late 2000s onward… black metal started branching out worldwide! You now have Japanese bands playing with traditional folk instruments alongside brutal riffs or South American acts making waves blending local rhythms with frostbitten fury—it gives everyone something funky fresh!
The genre reached new heights known as “blackgaze,” mixing shoegaze lushness into epic stormy crescendos—a breath-taking contrast meant purely ‘to be felt’ instead ‘to be played.’ Personally though? If you’re not headbanging along feeling possessed every once-in-a-while…? Are you truly living?
So here we find ourselves at present-day—that dark groove continues pulsating through thousands around us readying them each night after work; brothers & sisters adorned vividly embodying freedom without restrictions are finding solace deep within shadows created long ago.
From laughable moments amid insanity prevailing through creativity unchained—we’ve seen how laughter has seeped into this deep abyss known simply as BLACK METAL bringing light back even when dressed entirely responsible doom-n-gloom wear…
And remember folks—even when hanging upside down singing curses amidst flames—it never hurts having fun doing what makes ya feel alive…and maybe sporting glitter once-in-a-while isn’t so bad either ;)
