Forró’s origins were humble. It was born in the festas juninas, traditional June festivals filled with dancing, feasting, and a healthy dose of mischievous fun. One of the earliest forró musicians, Luiz Gonzaga, was known for his playful lyrics and his ability to bring people together with his music. It’s said he was so good at making people dance that he once had to flee a concert after a group of men started fighting over a beautiful woman who couldn’t resist his music!

One of the most prominent modern musicians, Belchior, famously left Fortaleza in his youth to chase his musical dreams. While he became a national icon, he never forgot his roots, often mentioning his hometown in his songs. Interestingly, Belchior once said that he started writing music because he was too shy to talk to girls. He’d leave them handwritten poems, hoping to impress them with his lyrical talent!

A funny side note: during Carnival, it’s not uncommon to see people wearing colorful, outrageous costumes, and even dancing on top of cars. One year, a local musician was so caught up in the spirit of the celebration that he climbed on top of a bus and started playing his accordion. Unfortunately, the bus driver wasn’t amused and had to call the police!
