Born and raised in Durban, he has risen to international acclaim for his infectious, bass-heavy sound, characterized by its minimal, repetitive beats and dark, hypnotic melodies. Gqom: A Sound of the Streets Gqom, meaning "to smash" or "to stomp" in Zulu, emerged in the townships of Durban in the early 2010s.
